Lange & Söhne at the 2010 Salon Belles Montres

Nov 29, 2010,12:42 PM

Lange & Söhne was without any doubt one of the most sucessful exhibitors at the Salon Belles Montres: in France, the Manufacture from Saxony has an excellent reputation thanks to its exclusivity and because  it brings an alternative offer to the classic Swiss brands. We can't imagine the positive impact of the Zeitwerk: it gave a more innovative image thanks to its original time display and with this model, the watch addicts have realized that Patek was not the only brand with very long waiting lists !

The layout of the booth at the Salon was very classic with the F.A.Lange cabinet at the back just below a large pic of the 3 honey gold watches. The good piece of news was the presence of the Tourbograph which was not at the Salon QP or at the Salon "Les Montres".

Right in the middle of the booth, the already classic enlarged model of a chronograph caliber was set up to highlight the ability of the Manufacture to build impressive chronographs. The comprehensive range of chronographs was displayed from the new 1815 chronograph to the Double-Split and as I said, the Tourbograph.

The collection was almost complete: we noticed the absence of the Saxonia line (except the Annual Calendar)... maybe a sign of an upcoming evolution which will be unveiled at the 2011 SIHH ? Who knows?

Of course, I took the opportunity of my visit at the booth to shoot some watches. I only chose 2010 novelties.... except one !

Let's start with a few pics of the booth:

A beautiful movie about the Savoir-Faire of the Manufacture:

The F.A.Lange collection:

Some cabinets:

I didn't understand this watch at the beginning: the Richard Lange Referenzuhr. When I saw it at the SIHH, I was surprised by its very specific dial, its big second hand, its small power reserve, a sort of reverse Lange 31 days ! But now, I really like it and I think that it is a totally coherent watch within the Richard Lange line dedicated to chronometry. And... what a beautiful caliber !

We often speak about the WG 1815.... it is the reason why I dediced to shoot the platinum LE ! We easily recognize it thanks to its hands. A very nice and very discrete watch.

So here it comes: the Tourbograph ! Even if I prefer the original version, I think that the F.A.Lange decoration works very well, especially the use of honey gold.

One day, a friend of mine told me that the Saxonia Annual Calendar was a perfect Business watch. I think he's right. The balanced dial, less busy than the Langematik Perpetual is really beautiful and the big date is a key feature in this context. And who can resist to the Sax-o-Mat caliber with its 3/4 plate?

The Grande Lange 1 Luminous is the love&hate watch of the collection. No mixed emotions here ! You love it or you hate it ! This watch is far from being my fav one at Lange but at the end, I think I prefer it to the Lange 1 Luminous thanks to a clean small second subdial.

The beauty from the past is the Lange 1 Platinum Moonphase. The combo between the hands, the indexes and the moon is gorgeous. It is the reason why I wanted to share with you this pic of the dial:

As always, it was a true pleasure to be welcome by the Lange team, Julie, Lucia and Jacques ! Even if the booth was crowded, they dedicated me a lot of time ! Thanks a lot to them, Lange has to be proud of its ambassadors !

Fr.Xavier

... a very nice Lange. Not only because I have got it and I therefore could be biased: I would say it is at the moment one of Langes most beautiful simple classic ones. Next to the RL PLM (P or / and RG) if one fancys a bit more presence and a more compli...

Ahh the RL PLM.......

Lange is tremendous but as the owner of a Grande Lange 1, I do not think I would prefer luminous hands!

Beautiful Platinum pieces there!

Thanks for the dedication to the 1815 in Pt, it is one of the Langes that sees the most wrist time on me. Discrete, and with a perfect movement that ticks as if it's quartz. And that Platinum Lange 1 moonphase, would have been the perfect moonphase for me...

Now you've made me sad

The hands have a key impact on the Lange design. I find them beautiful on the pt 1815. Fr.Xavier

It is not the exclusivity but, design and German precision manufacture which make ALS

For me exclusivity is not a question of price or of rarety. It is a question of quality as you said it. And Lange is on top of the pyramid. Fr.Xavier

What did you "get" about the Referenzuhr?

 By: tee530 : November 30th, 2010-19:25
Great review and photos, Fr. X, thanks for the post! I was wondering how your thinking evolved on the Referenzuhr. I admit that I find the mismatched side-by-side subdials a little off-putting, and that perhaps I don't "get" this piece. (I prefer the vert...

You described it well. At the beginning I was surprised by the unbalanced dial and by the complication I didn't understand. But now, I consider that the unbalanced side of the dial brings character (and I prefer the subdials horizontally aligned). About t...

Truly amazing watches and you are right, it was nice to be able to see AND TOUCH the watches on the booth as opposed to other brands. The shame is these pieces remain unaffordable for most passionate people like me!...If only they could have a few afforda...

Even if we know that some SS Lange were produced, the use of precious metals stays a strong creed. Fr.Xavier

Wonderful photos, all the way!!!

I really enjoy your photos. How do you do it, especially at those events where the lighting and such is not necessarily ideal? Thanks for the report! Ken

I must say though that the Grande Lange 1 has character...always did...It always had a playful look and a more statement size... I know all the discussion about the movement being too small and all the "eating" dial,but...but...it has its own identity.. I...
