Nico,
The current Mrs MTF and I collected A. Lange & Sohne watches....not a drawer-ful like some people here
...but enough to appreciate the different aesthetic of the 1815 Collection compared to the Richard Lange line or the seminal Lange 1 range.
The 1815 Collection exude an air of quiet functionality. There is no extremis nor excess in the form derived from function. The big hole on the dial for the tourbillon cage is precisely that... a hole for the cage. Nothing more. Nothing less. I feel calm when looking at the dial. It points me to the functional sector..... the time display.
I like the Richard Lange too.....after all, I got one as my "Life" watch after lung surgery because it has no date display. I can live the rest of my life not counting the days but that is a different feeling of nothingness.
Regards,
MTF

A fascinating watch, and thanks for the detailed explanation of it, and of the manufacture. Great!

Many thanks for this detailed post and enjoyable to read post! I have mentioned years ago before but would like to mention it again at this occasion: The name Glashuette implies that the town did have in its origins a glass industry. Glass back those year...

I think the 1815 Tourbillon is also a connoisseur watch.
By: foversta : September 14th, 2014-01:33
Actually, I don't know what is a definitive definition of a TRUE connoisseur watch. Do you mean that there are obvious common criterias to fall into this category? It would be too simple. Each connoisseur has his own criterias... What I can say is that th...

Like, for example, the sophistication of the RL PLM, which doesn't " jump ' to the eyes. Here, we immediately know that there is a Tourbillon, it is impossible to not see it, as it makes a hole in the dial. And an imposing one. But you are right, to each ...

is exact. Just perfection to execute such a difficult mechanical event: time and time again. They test it around 50000 times (they have a machine that does this by the way) before being satisfied that the mechanism works as conceived. You can witness it a...
Excellent report
By: alphabeta81 : September 11th, 2014-14:47
The tourbillon is stunning, and finish is beyong reproach, but the RL PLM still stands out ?(much like the PP 5078 does for me) as simple refined complexity, which is a rare class of horological mastery
I did not see any comparison

alphabeta81, I agree; it is a detailed report cramming much information into a small page space. Perhaps it was a mistake to include a photo of the Richard Lange PLM in a review of the 1815 Tourbillon? There was nothing in the report to indicate a compari...

1815 tourbillon and the RL PLM are understated watchmaking excellence. The tourbillon is not placed there as a 'shout' to see what you have; more an expression of watchmaking prowess. Andrew H
It's all about air
By: MTF : September 11th, 2014-16:01
An older and I presume wiser collector once told me that the secret to a great tourbillon compared with a good tourbillon is the amount of "air" you get. I think he meant the sense of airiness that a great tourbillon gives. We've all seen the el-cheapo to...
Thanks for your comprehensive article Andrew.

It is a watch I had the chance to wear during 2 weeks and I wrote an article about it. I postpone the publication for obvious reasons and I will come back to it in several months. Fx
