SIHH 2011: Lange Söhne (Rhythm, Sound and Fine Tuning)

Jan 23, 2011,05:02 AM

2011 will be a very important year for Lange. In 2010, Lange has been back on the right tracks with a new commercial dynamic and a big increase of the sales figures. The context is now much favourable to start a new area with the arrival of Mr Wilhelm Schmid as CEO of the brand. Obviously, it is too soon to see his influence (he officially arrived the 1st of January) but he has already perfectly understood what I would call the pillars of success for Lange (innovation, finishings, craftmanship, unique design style...) and what are the expectations of the Lange lovers. We will see during the next months and years what will be the strategic direction under his responsability. Be sure that Jérôme Lambert will still carefully follow Lange future. They are maybe details but we could feel his influence in the way the booth was designed: more open (reception desk was moved on the right side to give more free space in the entrance), more colourful (look at the pictures on the wall), he brought more excitement... and if the cocktail between this excitement, this energy and the german perfection works (and sure it will work...), Lange can be optimistic for the upcoming years.

I have to explain you now why I chose this report title.

Rhythm: when I did my 2010 report, I needed to split it into 10 parts. I will do it this year in 3 parts. I really think that 2010 was exceptionnal and that Lange is back this year with its "classic" rhythm, at least a more suitable rhythm for a brand which produces around 5.000 watches per year. But don't get wrong: Lange unveiled 5 new calibers during this SIHH, each of them using the in-house spiral. The list of novelties may appear to be short, it doesn't mean that it is less ambitious in a pure watchmaking point of view.

Sound: I believe I don't need to explain why, with the Zeitwerk Striking time, Lange has entered a new world: the one of acoustic watches. I know that we all expected more from Lange on this topic. In fact, whatever is the complication, we have great expectations with Lange. But the first Lange striking watch was so long-awaited that we all were secretly wishing a sort of ultimate watch, a sort of german answer to the swiss Grande Sonnerie.

Let's face it: within the Lange team, only Anthony de Haas has a great and big experience in striking watches. You don't build easily a striking watch even if you are an impressive watchmaker. There are so many problems to solve (how do the hammers play, what is the perfect shape for the chimes, how to design the watch to improve the accoustic and to reduce the useless sounds etc... that a striking watch is always, more than other any watch, a collective work. Anthony could have made the choice to duplicate his knowledge and to create a kinda Swiss Minutes Repeater in a context of a watch of the current collection. It is obviously not the will. With the Zeitwerk, the Lange team is learning about the striking watches. The choice of the Zeitwerk to create this first watch was logical. Thanks to the huge power delivered by the mechanism, there was enough energy left to add a complication  without disturbing the perfect behaviour of the watch.

Fine Tuning: with the new collection, Lange has redesigned its entry level collection by changing few details which are not obvious at first glance but which are far from being neutral. We will see why in the Saxonia part dedicated to this key collection for Lange.

What more can I say?

I would add that as usual, the Lange team (HQ, Western Europe, everybody has the booth) welcomed all the attendees as usual, with a very friendly and warm attitude. We also felt the positive trend in which the brand is currently. And we were very very pleased to see a dynamic Mr Walter Lange who attended the Lange Owners Group dinner on Tuesday with a lot of energy: he also participated in the presentation of the novelties and gave his comments and feelings about them.

Views of the booth:

Maybe I was the last one to leave the SIHH wink

Part 1: the Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-05:04
I would like to start with this watch because it is, without any doubt, my fav of the new collection. Lange published the press release before the Salon so we were quite excited to discover it in the metal. I was not disappointed. For me, this watch is th...

Merci beaucoup!

for bringing this RL PLM to mere mortals like me! I particularly appreciate the Pt shots! Tschuss Stephen

Thanks Stephen !

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-10:58
The Pt version is beautiful with the neutral color of its case which perfectly works with the dial. Fr.Xavier

this is a beaut.

the PLM is undoubtedly the star, and the talk of the ZW strike hour is just distraction.i do not think the dial is "flat", afterall it is inspired by a pocketwatch. a beautiful blend of classic styling and contemporary interpretation. thanks for the repor...

Part 2: the Zeitwerk Striking Time

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-05:06
So, here it is, the first striking watch from Lange. I already explained the context in the introduction of my report. To be honest with you, I'm not a fan of this watch. Even if for the technical reasons (mainly the available power), the Zeitwerk was a g...

My only gripe from what I have read is the size.

 By: ArthurSG : January 23rd, 2011-05:32
Apart from that, I like how it looks, I like that it is an added complication on top of the original jump hour so in that regard, I feel the sanctity of the original Zeitwerk is preserved which would not be so if the Zeitwerk was released in a plethora of...

Arthur....

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-11:02
You have to consider that the dial has the same size. The enlargement is due to the presence of the chimes around the dial. So even if the case is larger, the watch doesn't really look bigger than the other one. Thanks a lot for your comments! Fr.Xavier

Didn't know that FX.

 By: ArthurSG : January 23rd, 2011-15:58
Thanks. It wears bigger though I would imagine?

Not for me

which was MY (not others) perspective in my original comment on the same.

Thanks for the report! I agree...

 By: manitouman : January 23rd, 2011-05:41
I think that the restoration of the 42500 has given Lange many ideas / design elements to use now and for the future ...... Check out the hammers/gong... What will they 'recycle' next? I know this years SIHH has only just ended but I can't wait for the ne...

Yes Dave, your remark was confirmed by Lange.

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-12:51
The 42500 will help them a lot for future projects. Thanks for your comments. Fr.Xavier

Hopefully a 24 h dial piece. [nt]

 By: =RWK= : January 24th, 2011-14:21
I think our friends at ALS have this right. Rather then a complex MR they have kept it simple, and therefore are remainng true to the elegance which is A. Lange & Söhne. In addition, they way in which the Zeitwerk strikes is much more practical then tryin...

I am pleased to say.........

 By: Topcat30093 : January 25th, 2011-10:35
That fortunately, nothing from the 2011 collection has caused me to get excited. But if I did make a choice it would be for the Zeitwerk

Get one Topcat! [nt]

Part 3: the new Saxonia collection

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-05:07
We don't have to be wrong: the Saxonia collection is a key issue for Lange. Franckly speaking, we had the feeling that Lange was looking for the right solution for its entry level during the last years: end of the first 1815 collection, end of the first S...

... as I am in a hurry but will do read all at a later. My favorite is also the new and great Saxonia line: perfect, elegant watches! The most tempting one is the auto in WG with a 3 Hz movement that I am asking a watch of this caliber to have, 38.5 mm an...

I would like to thank you for your report..... I am a bit surprised though.... Lange usually reserves the silver indicators for platinum models and blue for wg... Why the silver on the Saxona models? Thanks Cheers

Maybe it is cause it looks good? :-) ! Well spoted! I wondered also...

By: COUNT DE MONET : January 23rd, 2011-12:15
but, IMHO, in WG it can be a very, very universally weareable wacth: It will grace any tuxedo and will not jar with jeans and t-shirt. I have to see it first in meatl, but this could be a very handsome and powerful (72h power reserve) every day and any oc...

For coherence and harmony of colors.

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-12:34
No platinum version here so they can choose the colors which are the best with the WG version. I really think they created something very harmonious with these Saxonia. Fr.Xavier

Lange did not charge in past differently ...

By: COUNT DE MONET : January 23rd, 2011-13:44
for each color of gold. Or did they? With the Saxonia they introduce this scheme, like others do. Regards Moritz

That's true, it is a 2011 novelty. ;-)

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-22:20
The change of price is mainly due to the palladium increase of price: the WG costs more to be produced than the other golds. Fr.Xavier

Thanks... :)

The Thin received a warm welcome.

It is, despite its very classic look, an original watch within the Lange collection. Fr.Xavier

I tried Saxonias in SIHH

 By: dr.kol : January 24th, 2011-03:18

Are you sure about the Saxonia thin?

By: COUNT DE MONET : January 31st, 2011-14:45
To call it your favorite? What I can read in this watch is this: - most likely the management consultation with Vacheron showed that the Patrimony Contemporain is a mega seller and Lange is jumping also on that train. - secondly: a new movement like this ...

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-07:48
The movie is not present on the CD which was given at the SIHH. But you can find the movie in the part of the website dedicated to the novelties. I managed to download the flv version of it. Hope it helps ! Fr.Xavier

One JLC/Lambert influence I don't want: rose gold only

 By: peafjp : January 23rd, 2011-11:35
I'm a little nervous about the Saxonia Thin, available only in rose gold. JLC tends to offer only SS and rose gold, with rare PT and WG models. Hopefully Lange is just adopting a Patek model and future metals will debut in future.

I don't have this feeling and well...

 By: foversta : January 23rd, 2011-12:47
we can expect future versions of this Saxonia Ultra Thin with other case metals. BTW, Jérôme Lambert perfectly knows that the same strategy doesn't work for both Lange and JLC. They are two different brands. Fr.Xavier
