Part 1: Dresden
Dec 09, 2012,01:27 AM
It was my first stay in Dresden during the Xmas period! Honestly, I was a bit afraid by the negative temperatures and by the difficulties to move in the city due to the snow. But in Saxony, it is not like in Paris, snow is not such mysterious thing which paralyses everything.
I was very seduced by the Xmas atmosphere in Dresden. There are several Xmas markets in the city and the white colour of snow combines perfectly with some dark monuments of the city.
Dresden has something magic. It is of course a beautiful city thanks to its monuments which were re-built over the last decades. But I also feel a sort of strange mix between melancholy (maybe due because the night was coming a bit after 4pm) and the warm attitude of the people from Saxony. I love this contrast.
As I told you, we were perfectly welcomed by the Lange team but I also could appreciate the way the staffs of the shops, of the boutique, of the hotel took care of me during the stay.
My first stay in Dresden took place in 2005. But I remembered very well the city, after all, Dresden is not bigger than Los Angeles. So without the map, I enjoyed a large walk in the city streets.
A Xmas atmosphere in the Hotel:
The Dreikönigskirche:
Bretzel anyone?
At 2pm I started to fell hungry!
The delicous Christstollen:
A mandatory accessory:
Nothing is better than a glass of hot wine to face the low temperatures!
August the Strong is looking towards Poland!
View from Augustusbrücke:
The Brühlsche Terrassen:
On Augustusbrücke:
The Catholic Church:
The Semper Opera:
It was starting to snow!
The famous Fürstenzug (procesion of Princes) wall:
The Lange boutique is located very close to the wall:
Another famous monument, the Frauenkirche:
Pictures taken on the Brühlsche Terrassen:
Back to the Catholic church:
August the Strong:
The former stables of the Royal Palace whose shape inspired the Arkade:
Still hungry!
The Neumarkt and the Frauenkirche on the background:
The most impressive market is the Altmarkt Xmas market :
Back to the hotel by walking on the bridge:
The day after was more snowy:
We visited the Asisi Panometer of Dresden located close to this old gaz storage building:
Asisi creates dreamlike settings using real monuments:
The Panometer allows to discover a stunning 360° view of Dresden in the XVIIIth century:
We have the feeling to be back several centuries ago! And the Panometer features a night & day display of Dresden!
The Taschenbergpalais:
Even with a hard snow, the visit of the Zwinger is mandatory in Dresden!
The Zwinger was an entertainment palace for the Kings of Saxony:
The Rococo style of the Zwinger:
The Catholic church on the left, a view from the Semper Opera side:
The Frauenkirche:
Can you imagine that the church was rebuilt only a few years ago? Rebuilding started in 1994 and the church was inaugurated in 2005.
In front of the Fürstenzug, several centuries of difference but our 4 legs companions are still here:
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and that I give you the wish to discover this charming city which deserves a stay thanks to the treasures of its past.
It is really amazing to consider that the city was totally destroyed in 1945 and that in 1990 we could find large holes, ruins in its center like scares on the face. In 20 years, Dresden has found again a large part of its past beauty.
