Part 4: the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon

Dec 08, 2013,08:32 AM

The Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon is a superb museum located inside the Zwinger dedicated to scientific instruments, terrestrial and celestial globes and historic clocks.

I visited it for the first time in 2005 but since then it was closed to be renovated during 6 years. It re-opened its doors this year. The pre-SIHH event gave me the opportunity to visit it again in its renovated rooms and I must confess I didn't regret it!

There are basically 3 main parts of the museum:

- large telescopes and burning mirrors
- the globes from over 7 centuries!
- the clocks and the instruments

It is almost impossible for me to describe all the marvels which can be found in this museum. Or the report would take ages! Anyway, I would do a simple recommendation: if you are in Dresden, don't miss this visit, you would not regret it!

Here are a few snapshots taken during the visit:

The Museum is located inside a Zwinger wing:

Lange & Söhne is sponsor of the Museum. We can see it thanks to this large display on the wall but also in the exhibition. Two watches highlight the two periods of the brand: the glorious past with the 42500 Grande Complication and a Lange 1 which symbolizes the new start, the beginning of a new area.

Telescopes and burning mirrors:

A globe:

The clocks and the scientific instruments:

The watch on the right inspired the Richard Lange Tourbillon:

Of course, I couldn't miss the 42500:

The Grande Complication "La Grandiose" made at the end of the XIXth century from a L.E.Piguet base:

This is model of the Semper Opera clock:

Several centuries ago, the GPS was already existing!

Poor bear...

A fantastic visit I highly recommend. I will try later to come back with a more detailed report on this Museum.

 By: moc : December 9th, 2013-07:32
I like it ,I don t go mad about it but its fine. As I said before ,the old Luna Mundi set has a strength and character difficult to beat. This watch is in the line of the new Grande Lange,it lost personality to blend more with the rest of the collection,b...

You are raising an important point Mo.

There is many times a kind of choice to make between a pure style and a style with character. When I shot the two watches together, I couldn't decide if one was more beautiful or more attractive than the other. But be sure that I appreciate at least as mu...

Part 7: the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase, the unexpected expected watch

 By: foversta : December 8th, 2013-08:48
The Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase is for me an "unexpected expected" watch. Expected because each of us was pretty sure that after the presentation of the new Grand Lange 1 two years ago, a Moon Phase version would be proposed later. I remind you very quickly ...

You know... it's funny... all off us have probably dreamed of a watch that made the moon phase larger, front and center. And to have such a watch be a Lange, with (except for VC's sculpted moon disc) the best moon disc in the business... you can't imagine...
