Dato and DS.

Nov 17, 2014,00:18 AM

Just so happens, I had lunch with a friend today who was wearing his Datograph U/D and I still had my DS on from yesterday. So to follow up on my previous post, here are a few phone pics. to show the similarities and differences between the two.

The DS appears to have a glossy black dial while the Dato's is more dark grey and matt.

Movement

Stacked with Dato on top.

Wrist shot.

Needless to say meeting my friend for lunch was a pleasure in more than one way. smile

Thanks for looking.

cheers

fernando

What I find very interesting is your stack.

It clearly shows that the difference in the proportions, between the Dato 2d generation and the DS is not important anymore. Which was not the case between the Dato First Generation and the DS. Not only the diameter, but the thickness. I had many opportun...

A few years back ....

I couldn't decide between the DS or the original Dato because size wise they were too extreme. With the new Dato up/down they closed the gap and struck a happy medium but they changed something very endearing in the old Dato - the character of the dial. H...

Mechanical improvements, but an aesthetical regression.

I too have this feeling. The new Dato enjoys technical improvements, that is undisputable. BUT Lange killed the dial of the first generation, with this power reserve indicator, and a layout which lacks character, strenght and balance. So, for me, the Dato...

Necessary? Useful?

Not necessary. Doubtful whether any dearly expensive mechanical watch is necessary. Useful? Maybe, maybe not. That would depend on the owner's lifestyle or profession. But I sincerely doubt any one who collects these little machine marvels cares about use...

True words Mike. :) [nt]

Given the choice today ...

I would spent my money on a (used) DS instead of a brand new Dato. The latter is not a bad choice at all, but the DS is just too adorable and I got used to bigger sizes :-) Nice lunch! Cheers, Oliver

Great logic Oliver! :) [nt]

I have always loved both……

The original Datograph & DS. But for me, what made the watch even better, was the improvements made to the newer version of the Datograph. :)

Hard to dispute that! :) [nt]

I, too, prefer the DS.

I have seen them both side by side and the DS has more punch to it. Fernando said it right with the glossy dial. I also like the Roman numerals and the diameter and thickness has always been a plus for me on the mighty Double Split. The movement was alway...

You are most welcome!

I tend to agree with you.... but that's very subjective and the new Dato will have its followers I'm sure. :) Thanks for your feedback. cheers fernando
