... is a very interesting change in the cosmetics of this beautiful watch.
I feel the blue dial adds to the beauty of this model, which otherwise produces mixed emotions in me.
When this new model was launched around 2008, and I viewed the first photographs and reports, I was very exited with the idea of owning one.
As a matter of fact, as soon as a very little batch of them arrived to my Country at beginning 2009 (I was told you could count with the fingers of one hand them!) I plunged on it and bought one of these exclusive examples. I am told no more where introduced here since then, so there exist very few watches of this reference here.
I must admit I was fascinated with this watch: the machining, the polishing, the details on its dial, the masive presence, everything destilled high quality!
I felt (and still feel) that this watch is a pure example of the skill of making and technical development of the watch industry as only Rolex can show.
But then came the real truth: I could never really fell in love with it, and couldn´t stand it on my wrist.
I don´t need to tell here how much I love Rolex brand, and specially the traditional Submariner, a watch I have been wearing almost exclusively since I was 16 years old, that is 50 years ago next month. My Submariner grew vintage as same time I became vintage myself!
I own many Rolex references, both modern and vintage, which I enjoy wearing in rotation so much. But this was not the case with the DSSD. I promise I tried hard along more than a year, but I finally relegate it to its original box, in pristine condition. It is too big, too heavy, and specially it rides too high on my wrist, rather awkward.
One day in 2010, I was wearing it at home, while giving it another chance to love it, when my son came home to visit me. He noticed the Big Diving Watch on my wrist and commented very enthusiastically how much he liked it, and asked me why I didn´t use it more often. As a matter of fact he said had never seen it before during the more than a year I have been owning it. I explained it to him.
When he left home after dinner, I had made my mind. A few weeks later I visited my son for his own birthday and I was carrying with me a green paper bag with the Rolex Coronet on it, containing the pristine Deep Sea in his original box, papers, tags, etc.. It was my birthday present for him, which he accepted with much joy.
For first time I finally got a big pleasure from this timepiece: staring at the face of surprise of my son receiving this watch was enough reward to me.
Here are some pictures taken before presentlng this watch to my son.
Very cordially, Abel.
