I've so enjoyed the Hawaiian use of that gesture that I wished we could bring it back with us to Boston. But you can't do that sort of thing on your own.

The story goes, that a sugar cane worker who was missing the 3 fingers between his thumb and pinky would wave to children riding to school on the sugar cane train and hence the Shaka wave. Most locals don’t actually wave the Shaka, they simply hold it up....
