Fifty Fathoms of Awesomeness, the Bathyscaphe in grey

Oct 28, 2016,23:07 PM

The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is a watch that went under my radar for a long time. Recently when I was browsing for my next acquisition, this watch suddenly clicked with me. All versions of this watch look fantastic and each has its own unique look, and I had a really hard time deciding. So I went to the AD to see the watch in the metal, and I absolutely fell in love with it. In the end I chose the meteor grey dial because the dial is just gorgeous, and pairs great with the olive green/black NATO and sailcloth straps. The blue dial is beautiful but a bit harder to go with all outfits, and even though the black + black ceramic looks fantastic in photos, it is overall too dark on my wrist. In the end the cheapest version works the best for me!=)

Outer box has a nice sailcloth embossed texture to it

One of the coolest watch boxes I have.

This is my first watch with NATO strap and I think the Bathyscaphe is match made in heaven with the NATO look. And another reason is that I don't have to spend extra $500 on the NATO hardware later on.

Just look at this dial, so beautiful, so interesting, so versatile. So clean and simple compared to the Rolex Batman (which I was my alternative choice). The grey is definitely on the warm side, sometimes looks a bit reddish and sometimes greenish.

Pairs so well with the olive green NATO strap

The polishing on the NATO hardware and buckle is nothing short of stellar.

Case polishing is outstanding too, very crisp. Just look at the sharpness of the multi-faceted lugs.

The white gold indices are on the small side, but the high gloss polishing allows them to glitter like jewels as light hits them.

Love the red tip of the seconds hand, a very nice touch.

The Bathyscaphe is a tool watch at heart, but it is oh-so-elegant! Never really thought I would use 'elegant' to describe a dive watch.

The beauty doesn't just end on the front. Flip it over and you will find one of the best looking movements made for a sports watch, caliber 1315. It is also highly modern, with an amazing 5 day power reserve and silicon hairspring giving it antimagnetic properties. The winding of the rotor is almost silent and is super efficient.

Close up and it is clear that the wide anglage is hand polished, and reflects light like a mirror, something that is almost never seen for a watch of this price point, not to mention for a sports watch.

Even the back edge of the rotor is hand finished!

The rotor is 18k gold but plated to give it a dark look. Nice, clean Blancpain logo engraving

Compared with Panerai PAM422. Both iconic dive watches with completely different approaches.

A few wrist shots

The Bathyscaphe is a fantastic watch inside out, good looks with a good movement to match. It is also probably the most accurate watch in my collection, running at +2s/day. The only downside is that the NATO strap wears rather bulky, not very practical for winter. I have already ordered a black sailcloth strap and can't wait for it to arrive. This watch is quickly becoming one of my favs in my collection! Follow me @watchestolove on Instagram for more photos!

First, congrats! This version of the Bathyscaphe is very nice, and your excellent photos give it justice I am with you on your view on the blue dial ceramic Bathyscaphe. I also tried it and let it pass, since I find the gray ceramic too dark. Thanks a lot...

Thank you Henrik!

I've always thought it's a little odd for a sports watch to be in blue, but it is very subjective=)

Kevin, congratulations for your addition AND for your superb photos.

The box, the dial and the finish make this one heck of a watch to own.

Thank you Alkiro! [nt]

I really think the nato strap makes the watch. I wish they would make a 20mm strap for the vintage watches! Brian

I think i might have figured out how to get one.

I have a call to make in the morning and i'll post my results later.

Great choice!

Great choice! The dark grey dial makes the indices change color (prism, reflection), depending on angle. The bezel is really sleek.

try the Blue NATO too

Thank you for the great review and superb images. I went through the same thought process in the summer and got the grey dial on green nato... I love it! when you feel like experimenting with a dark nato strap, I actually recommend getting the dark blue n...

Never thought about a blue NATO

I think it'll look very interesting! May I ask how much it costed you to buy extra set of NATO hardware? Thanks in advance!

Not cheap... but worth it.

in the $400's - small investment but in my opinion the Bathyscaphe was practically made for NATO, so it gives you flexibility. Especially since I would recommend to avoid removing the spring bars that could easily scratch the lugs.

That is very true

Thank you for the info. I'm waiting for my sailcloth strap to come first, and maybe I'll look into the blue NATO strap next=)

Excellent review and photos! Thanks!

Looks awesome!

Completely changes the feel of the watch!

Hey Fernando, one question

 By: watchestolove : November 11th, 2016-22:40
I noticed that when I pull the crown out fully to adjust time, and when I push it back in the 'click' feedback isn't very clear. Sometimes one push to the end doesn't put the crown back to the winding position, it takes a couple tries. For example I don't...

Hi Kevin

 By: fernando : November 11th, 2016-23:28
I don't recall having such a problem. Mine is in the bank right now but as far as I can remember, the crown works fine and has a great feel to it - smooth winding and easy to manipulate. Maybe it requires a small adjustment. The boutique or AD can assess ...

Thank you for the quick reply, Fernando

I will go to AD and take a look at their other watches for comparison when i get a chance.

A Great Photo Report and Commentary

You did a wonderful job discovering the many details that make this Blancpain great. Truly, it is in a class by itself in the sport watch category.

Thank you!

I would almost go as far as saying the Bathyscaphe is great bang for the buck!
